Action = Away From Pain or Towards Gain

I believe we have two powerful urges in our lives. Two powerful motivators that cause our every action. Those two driving forces choices are:

  1. Our need to avoid pain
  2. Our desire to gain pleasure

Every action we take is a result of one of those two choices. Think about it!

And this is not just an important insight into our daily lives but also into those of our customers. You see, our customers also make decisions based on “moving away from pain” or “moving toward pleasure.” In our businesses if we can understand and tap in to people’s pain and pleasure motivators we can influence them to take action (buy that item, enroll in that conference…).

In order to avoid pain (rejection) we will avoid making a cold call to a prospect, but on the flip side we will sit and watch a movie because of the pleasure we expect to get from it.

However, not all people react to the same situations with the same motivation. One person may walk to work because he enjoys the exercise.  Another may walk because they are afraid of driving a car.  One person may read several newspapers a day because they enjoy current affairs. Another might read the same papers because he doesn’t want to miss out on information or for people to think of him as uneducated.  He’s not so much seeking pleasure but avoiding pain.

Find out what motivates your customers and you are one step closer to helping them avoid pain or gain pleasure.

What Has Your Focus?

Last time I wrote I asked a couple of questions…

What is your vision?

What are your goals?

Are you motivated by them?

Who do you have supporting you along the way?

Have you taken time out to think about these?  I hope you have jotted something down to start the process of forming an ideal vision for your business and your life, and setting some realistic goals which will allow you to reach your ultimate vision.

Habakkuk 2:2-3

“Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.”

It’s amazing that the bible can be so old yet so relevant. Write down you vision so that everyone you live and work with knows where you’re heading. Get everyone on board so you are all moving in the same direction. Allow yourself to focus on those activities that will get you closer to your goals, and steer clear of those that will only distract you.

It may take time, but stick at it.

Focus is an amazing thing. You can accomplish anything if it is your focus.

What has your focus?

What’s Your Vision?

Haven’t the Olympics been great! It reminds me of a time (a while ago now) when I used to train as an athlete. My days of being a competitive swimmer involved early mornings; very early mornings! My alarm went off at 4.23am. The day had begun. Off for my morning training session.

The commitment I had made to swimming was not only a personal one. As a teenager it’s not all that easy getting from here to there without a license, so the commitment extended to my parents.

“So are you feeling pumped this morning Lise?”

Sometimes I responded, other times I didn’t.

“In this training session it’s all up to you! Are you going to be a cruise ship or a destroyer? You know the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just that little bit EXTRA!”

Dad’s pep talk would continue until we reached the pool, however I’m convinced he kept going to himself on his way home in the car.

Dad had caught my vision of wanting to be the best swimmer I could. To give myself the opportunity to go as fast as ever by giving my all in each and every training session. Without that support I would never have been in the position to compete at multiple Australian Swimming Championships including the 2000 Olympic trials.

The questions beg to be asked…

What is your vision?

What are your goals?

Are you motivated by them?

Who do you have supporting you along the way?

Let this quote resonate with you… “If you aim at nothing you are bound to hit it.”

Until next time…
