Make Budgeting Fun!

So we’re nearly at a new financial year. What better time is there to sit down and plan out your financial goals for the next year! That is, a budget! Budgeting isn’t a dirty word. An effective budget can, in a way, be quite liberating! If you have a certain amount set aside for a particular expense category, then you can spend it! Such as if you budget $100/month for clothes, and this sits well within your budget, then its guilt free spending! So really, it’s not all bad.

Make it fun even! Get a kick out of putting together your income and expenditure and then seeing what’s left! Have a goal of what the money you are saving is going towards and get excited about it! Let it drive you to save more!

Of course if you have put together your budget and your expenditure is greater than your earnings then you really need to knuckle down and get to the bottom of why. This will take some discipline but let the end goal spur you on to stick at it until you’re there.

If you’re not entirely sure what a budget is, in very simple terms, it is a list of all the money you have coming in (income), as well as a list of all the different things you might pay for (expenses). You will then have your income minus your expenses and what you have left is your savings (hopefully)!

What Has Your Focus?

Last time I wrote I asked a couple of questions…

What is your vision?

What are your goals?

Are you motivated by them?

Who do you have supporting you along the way?

Have you taken time out to think about these?  I hope you have jotted something down to start the process of forming an ideal vision for your business and your life, and setting some realistic goals which will allow you to reach your ultimate vision.

Habakkuk 2:2-3

“Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.”

It’s amazing that the bible can be so old yet so relevant. Write down you vision so that everyone you live and work with knows where you’re heading. Get everyone on board so you are all moving in the same direction. Allow yourself to focus on those activities that will get you closer to your goals, and steer clear of those that will only distract you.

It may take time, but stick at it.

Focus is an amazing thing. You can accomplish anything if it is your focus.

What has your focus?

What’s Your Vision?

Haven’t the Olympics been great! It reminds me of a time (a while ago now) when I used to train as an athlete. My days of being a competitive swimmer involved early mornings; very early mornings! My alarm went off at 4.23am. The day had begun. Off for my morning training session.

The commitment I had made to swimming was not only a personal one. As a teenager it’s not all that easy getting from here to there without a license, so the commitment extended to my parents.

“So are you feeling pumped this morning Lise?”

Sometimes I responded, other times I didn’t.

“In this training session it’s all up to you! Are you going to be a cruise ship or a destroyer? You know the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just that little bit EXTRA!”

Dad’s pep talk would continue until we reached the pool, however I’m convinced he kept going to himself on his way home in the car.

Dad had caught my vision of wanting to be the best swimmer I could. To give myself the opportunity to go as fast as ever by giving my all in each and every training session. Without that support I would never have been in the position to compete at multiple Australian Swimming Championships including the 2000 Olympic trials.

The questions beg to be asked…

What is your vision?

What are your goals?

Are you motivated by them?

Who do you have supporting you along the way?

Let this quote resonate with you… “If you aim at nothing you are bound to hit it.”

Until next time…
